Dear Reader,
So the horses are all in the gate - but unless Beijing makes its mind up soon, there is a real prospect of no winner. If neither candidate gets 600 votes in the initial 3-way race, then after Albert Ho has been eliminated the pro-democracy block should, if they are sensible, come back in round 2 and file blank votes to underline the farcical nature of the pseudo-election - and since the Liberals vow not to support C Y Leung under any circumstances, neither of the remaining candidates might get the required 600 votes, in which case the election starts all over again, and new candidates can then come forward, which is perhaps what Beijing now wants, because if they don't have a candidate who has the support of half the committee and the general public, then they are in for a rough ride over the next 5 years or less.
Our poll on the probability of being the next CE currently has Henry Tang at 36.8%, C Y Leung at 41.3% and Someone Else at 19.5% - so please update your estimates, keeping in mind that "Someone Else" implies that there will be no winner in the first election. Remember, we want to know what you think their chances are, not whom you want to win. Your PIN is above.
