Unmentioned: the fact that in HK, Disneyland is majority-owned by the HK Government and has an option on a huge chunk of idle land that could otherwise be used for housing. Incidentally, Bob Iger confuses air pollution with global warming by saying that he spoke out against Trump withdrawing the US from the Paris climate accords because “if people can’t breathe the air, they’re not going to theme parks.”

The former owner of the Cheoy Lee Shipyard site, still not satisified with the HK$1.51bn the government paid it to surrender its lease (and a pile of toxic mud which cost us $450m to clean up) to make way for HK Disneyland, presses its claim for compensation for the earlier loss of marine rights in 1995 when the Government gazetted reclamation for container terminals, abandoned in 2000 in favour of Disneyland. One good windfall deserves another, apparently.

Legislators should this afternoon refuse to sanction the HK Disneyland financial restructuring unless they get full disclosure of the Government-controlled theme park's accounts, plus a release of 60 hectares of valuable public land which would otherwise stay under option to the park for 20 more years. This land should then be tendered for competing and synergistic leisure use. (10-Jul-2009)

We call on the Government to publish the company's accounts, the related agreements, and the identities of the independent directors it said would be appointed.
