HKSAR Court of Final Appeal 香港特別行政區終審法院

Statement by CE John Lee on requesting interpretation of NSL from NPCSC
HK Government, 28-Nov-2022
You might think that having a leading human rights lawyer of his choice would add legitimacy to the goal of locking up Jimmy Lai for life. You'd be wrong. Predictably, within hours of the Court of [Semi-] Final Appeal's dismissal of the SJ's appeal against the admission of overseas counsel, the CE asks for an "interpretation" by the NPCSC. This will be rather awkward for the courts below, having unanimously upheld that it is "clearly in the public interest to admit an overseas specialist as eminent as Mr Owen so that the court will have the best assistance to tackle the formidable task at hand."
HKSAR v Chan Chun KitSummary Offences Ordinance s17
HK Court of Final Appeal, 15-Jul-2022
No thought crimes: in an encouraging sign that the highest HK court (but not the courts below) are robustly pushing back against overreaching prosecutions, the CFA unanimously overturns the Court of Appeal and Magistrate and rules that because cable ties are not manufactured for the purpose of restraining a person, they are outside the scope of the Summary Offences Ordinance, and the defendant's conviction is overturned. Applying the prosecution's wide interpretation would "do violence to the language" and "effectively turn the section into a thought crime" - Chief Justice Andrew Cheung Kui Nung.

In our view, the subsequent statement by the Chief Justice is not inconsistent with the article.
Government: colonial posting boxes still in service are "inappropriate"
HK Government, 9-Oct-2015
The Government is "looking into ways to update the markings on these boxes". Send them suggestions on a postcard. So are the royal insignia on the Court of Final Appeal building, and the crown on its dome, also "inappropriate"? How about the street names? Queen's Road to become Deng's Road?
Transcend This
If the new policy of "decolonisation" requires HK Post to vandalise its boxes, then what comes next? Perhaps the royal insignia on the Court of Final Appeal building will be "transcended". (5-Oct-2015)
CJ Geoffrey Ma: the judiciary is independent and everybody is equal before the law, without exceptionsSpeech by Zhang Xiaoming
HK Court of Final Appeal, 16-Sep-2015
This came after the head of the Central Government's Liaison Office, Zhang Xiaoming, claimed in a speech on 12-Sep-2015 that there is no separation of powers and that the Chief Executive of HK "transcends" the executive, legislature and judiciary.
